    Inpatient Coder, Full Time Days


    Join the hospital trusted by Chicago’s Southland, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, in this role an Inpatient Coder.


    Codes diagnoses and procedures on inpatient and outpatient medical records. Performs technical duties related to coding, reimbursement, and processing of medical record data.Accurately codes diseases and procedures for patients' medical records.Thoroughly reviews patient medical records for the correct narrative description of the applicable diagnoses and procedures.Accurately converts the narrative diagnoses and procedures into ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding via automated techniques.Appropriately sequences diagnoses and procedures according to current guidelines.Accurately assesses the appropriateness of final coding as it relates to current prospective payment regulations.Correctly "groups" diagnoses and procedures.Evaluates MS-DRGs to determine the most applicable grouping for a record. Abstracts demographic, diagnostic, and procedural information from patient medical records.

    Accurately enters required fields on the Coding abstract from information found in the medical record.Provides information and reports of coded/abstracted data.

    Demonstrates ability to interpret coded/abstracted data. Accuratley prepares reports of coded/abstracted date on a particular topic




    • Credentialing as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health
    • Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) is required.
    • Prior hospital coding experience preferred.



    • Ability to successfully complete an ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS,CPT coding test.
    • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
    • Requires social maturity to work closely with physicians, physician office staff and other hospital departments, providing assistance and direction when necessary.
    • High degree of analytical skills required in order to compile, interpret and utilize data.
    • Ability to learn and practice the confidential handling of medical record information.
