Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingall Memorial Hospital, as a Anatomic Pathology Technician in the Pathology Lab.

 

Job Summary 

 

Under the direction of the Pathology Supervisor and/or Lead, the Anatomic Pathology technician provides clerical and technical assistance to the Pathologists, Pathologist Assistant, Histotechnologists and Cytotechnologists; is responsible for the efficient and accurate receiving, identification, accessioning and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens; processing of referral orders; maintaining inventory and stocking of reception, grossing and frozen section areas; practicing of safe handling and disposal of body tissues and fluids; and is held accountable to maintain and promote trust, recognition and respect for the laboratory by positively interacting with physicians, patients, visitors and employees. Job duties and training for this position are generally separated into the 2 work areas, histology and cytology, although cross training will be done as needed to support the pathology department.

 

Essentail Job Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge/judgment concerning Anatomic Pathology computer procedures, specimens, associated cassettes and slides, accurate record keeping and ability to establish priorities and organize effectively.
  • Receives, accessions, and prepares specimens while addressing and documenting any discrepancies with specimens, labeling, or requisitions.
  • Appropriately labels specimens, cassettes or slides after verifying information on requisition and specimen container.
  • Retains and discards all specimens according to the lab retention policy.
  • Assists pathologists with frozen sections by setting up work area, staining immediate slides according to protocol, and taking x-ray film to Radiology for development and interpretation.
  • Accessions Gyn ThinPrep paps and Non-Gyn specimens in the AP computer while addressing and documenting any discrepancies with specimens, labeling, or requisitions.
  • Orders and prepares vials and labels for HPV testing for microbiology.
  • Processes, stains, and labels ThinPrep paps appropriately and loads and starts ThinPrep Imager.
  • Wraps and removes limbs to/from morgue.
  • Prepares FNA specimens for immediate evaluation when needed.
  • Orders and prepares cell blocks as needed on appropriate specimens.
  • Assists with inventory of grossing, frozen-section area, and cytology supplies and ensures items needed are submitted for ordering.
  • Provides quality and timely testing to promote trust, recognition and respect for the Anatomical Pathology Department and Ingalls Hospital with their patients and clients.
  • Communicates with immediate supervisor regularly and informs of problems, complaints, performance issues, supply/quality problems, concerns, and workflow.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Safety Test
  • Knowledge of Department Specific Competencies
  • Ability to remain in a fixed sitting position for long periods of time in an environment that involves
    inhaling xylene and other fumes.
  • A high degree of manual dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Some college preferred – i.e., anatomy, biology and medical terminology preferred
