Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital as an OB Care Technician in our Obstetrics Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Under the leadership of the Director/Manager of Patient Care Services and direction of the Registered Nurse(s), participates in the intra-operative care of a patient in the LDRP/OR suites specifically, but not limited to, patients undergoing C-Sections and PPTLs. Also assists the Labor nurses by setting up for deliveries, coaching during deliveries, caring of patients post-delivery and assisting obstetrician as needed during delivery. Is the phlebotomist on the obstetrical unit, performing blood specimen collection on all patients, labor and delivered as well as newborn. Also performs the infant hearing tests on newborns in accordance with Illinois law.
Essential Job Functions
- Anticipates the needs of obstetricians surgeons, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner. (The majority of time is spent standing.) The OBT is primarily responsible for maintaining the sterile field, being constantly vigilant that all members of the team adhere to aseptic technique
- OBTs act as assistants by holding retractors, instruments, suctions and cuts sutures as directed by the surgeon
- Removes all delivery equipment after delivery of infant, assuring all equipment room is cleaned and processed according to Infection Control Guidelines
- Assists RN during the post-delivery care of patients and newborn by providing clean environment, assisting patients ambulating after delivery, instructing on perinatal care, assisting patients with breast-feeding, and performing initial newborn bath using skill with regard to hypothermal regulation
- Contributes information regarding patient condition, needs and goals and information that may assist with discharge planning
- Performs physician-ordered venipuncture (blood draws) for blood specimen collection in patients, under the work direction of the RN
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Successfully completed medical terminology course and phlebotomy program. Completion of phlebotomy program must be completed before 6 months of hired date.
- Successfully completed OB Scrub program
- CNA or Medical Assistant
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or certification by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists)
- NCCLS (This is the legal name used to stand for National Committee Clinical Laboratory Standards)
- NPA (National Phlebotomy Association)
- ASCLS (American Society for Clinical Laboratory scientists)
